What does it mean to care in engineering education? Is care about being a kind and supportive teacher, or does it require us to fundamentally rethink how we teach, learn, research, and relate to one another?

Ethics of care offers a perspective that places relationships, responsibilities, attentiveness to others’ needs, and responsiveness at the heart of educational and research practice. Rather than treating care as an individual virtue or an optional addition to technical education, it invites us to consider how care is enacted (or neglected) in everyday educational interactions and institutional structures.

In this interactive SEFI webinar, we will explore what ethics of care means for engineering education and how it can inform our teaching and research. Drawing on a recent synthesis of research on care ethics in engineering education (https://doi.org/10.1002/jee.70087), we will introduce the key principles of care ethics and illustrate how they can translate into teaching and research practice through concrete examples of care moments from engineering teaching and research.

But this webinar is not just about presenting ideas. Through an interactive activity, participants will be invited to reflect on their own practices, share experiences and challenges, and explore opportunities for bringing care into their contexts.

This SEFI@work webinar is organised by the SEFI Ethics Special Interest Group. Learn more about the SIG here.
