Madrid, July 2026
As part of the BEST Symposium on Education (BSE) Madrid 2026 titled “Avatar: The Way of AI,” held from 18 to 27 July 2026, 24 students gathered at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería y Diseño Industrial (ETSIDI) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) to explore the critical topic of “Engineering Education in the Age of AI and Digital Transformation”, the research topic of BEST’s educational research for 2025/2027.
A major highlight of the symposium was the session titled “The Professor of the Future,” featuring guest professor Dr. Ramon Vilanova Arbos (SEFI Member, Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). The session’s goal was examining the needed changes in teaching practices, student–professor dynamics, and professor skills the educators of the future need to effectively guide students in AI-enabled learning environments.
Dr. Vilanova shared insights into SEFI’s pivotal role in modernizing engineering education and offered his vision on how teaching roles must adapt alongside rapidly advancing technology and uncertainties.
Following his presentation, the participating students and Dr. Ramon Vilanova Arbos participated in group work and dialogue, where they discussed and compared perspectives on the topic.
Through initiatives like BSE Madrid 2026, SEFI and BEST reaffirm their shared commitment to empowering students and faculties to co-create the future of engineering education.
